Coming into New Orleans, February 3, 2012

The tracks run alongside Interstate 10 on the west side of Lake Pontchartrain into downtown New Orleans.   Just read that it’s not really a lake but an estuary.   Whatever, it’s big. Passing through it seemed endless; but end it did in a maze of freeway ramps. Note the dome, as in super — the epicenter of the Katrina news stories — in the background.

Keith and Linda  at dinner on Train 59: City of New Orleans
Amtrak’s community seating matched me up with Keith and Linda, Wisconsin Republicans on their way to a Mexican island cruise, and with Lynn (seated next to me), a fellow blues loving’ socialist on her way to our tribal gathering in Memphis. The conversation slowed way down once they mentioned their support for Wisconsin’s union busting Governor Walker.

Segments 1 & 2: EVR > MEM

Screen grab of the Amtrak’s interactive map showing the route in dark red of our first two segments.  In Amtrak speak a “segment” means “on and off” the train, so Everett to Chicago is one and Chicago to Memphis is two. My USA Rail Pass is good for eight segments, used within 15 days. Cost was only $389!  Train #8, the eastbound Empire Builder is scheduled for departure this evening at 5:39p from Everett, arriving in Chicago on Tuesday afternoon.  Train #59, City of New Orleans departs at 8p and arrives in Memphis around 6:30 the next morning.  We’ll see.
